MLK Jr. worked to get voting rights for blacks in Alabama. He attempted to achieve this by leading marches and making speeches. One of the first marches ended in violence, as state troopers beat, trampled, and tear gassed marchers headed to Montgomery. The marchers eventually receive protection from the national guard and regular troops for the duration of their overall peaceful march.
Why did the state troopers attack the marchers if they weren't violent?
